Sustainability
In tune with 21st century environmental standards
Our design work for the whole peninsula features sustainability at every level.
The overall strategy for the peninsula includes environmental as well as social and economic targets. Creating a sustainable community is fundamental to the success of Greenwich Peninsula.
Some of the elements that go to make up the environmental strategy:
- Greenwich Peninsula will be London's first Low Emission Zone - by 2009 all cars owned by private sector residents will have to comply with the 2005 EU directive on emissions (Euro 4)
- As a condition of lease agreements, cars owned by people in affordable housing will have to comply with this directive by 2010
- The design maximises use of public transport and gives priority to pedestrians
- We will aim for the highest environmental ratings for new buildings - including the highest rating in the most widely used environmental assessment scheme (BREEAM), and a 4 star rating under the Code for Sustainable Homes. We expect to exceed building regulation requirements.
- Sustainable designs will lead to energy efficiency and encourage the use of renewable energy resources
- The designs will also result in lower water demand, grey water recycling and rainwater harvesting and will promote minimisation of waste
